Blackbird Singin’ in the Dead of . . . Afternoon?

I had a nice feathered visitor, who put on a little show for me, happily right next to the neighbor’s lovely pink rose.

I looked in my Audubon bird guide, and he looked to me like a Brewer’s Blackbird, him with his fine beak and white eye.  Since I am not very bird savvy, given the various kinds within a group, I asked my blog friend The Birding Bunch to confirm my ID.  Yay, I got one!

It’s cool how you caught him in the shadow so his white eyes really show up. You are a great example of someone who finds interesting photo ops in their own backyard. And as an aside, – isn’t it weird how male blackbirds eyes are white but females are brown? What’s with that?

OK, now that’s funny! You’ll see that you and I were singing the same song! Look at my post of last night!!

I hope you hadn’t glued that bird to the fence for the sake of a nifty picture.

You have the most fascinating fence! And like your friend, tootlepedal, “I hope you hadn’t glued that bird to the fence for the sake of a nifty picture!” 🙂

    • That corner is a fun place to catch pictures through my appropriately cleaned window. The neighbors have gangly roses that thankfully they don’t trim, and the other neighbor has a perching bush. Then a white stucco backdrop–great! Oh, and I bring the food. 🙂

How wonderful to hear the birds singing. The UK blackbird is known for its wonderful song too. Serenaded by birds – what more could you ask for?

    He was very impressive. 🙂

Such an interesting photo, Lily! I love the way the photo is divided with the white wall and the shadowed wall….the flower and the fence. The Blackbird just POPS in this photo! I am astonished by his eye~so white! You really captured a fantastic photo!

  8. I really like the one where he’s puffed up singing. Some birds really belt it out!

What a gorgeous bird, absolutely jet black! Our blackbirds are a little less… “gothic” looking, unfortunately; I’d love to see one of these guys in my garden! 🙂
