40 Years of I Do’s
He said will you, and I said I will;
we said I do, and we did
for years.
We said I do through the death of a child and a motorcycle wreck;
through a son’s car crash and a son’s heart crash;
through disappointments and unmet expectations,
and surpassed pleasures,
through lots of tears—from both laughter and pain.
I forgive, I love, I do.
We said I do through losses,
job changes, friend changes, geography changes, and physical changes,
baby boys and grandbaby joys;
and the years piled higher, one on another, as the I do’s piled higher still.
Our hair is thinner—mine more than his.
Our waists are thicker—mine more than his.
But for all the time gone by in a breath,
we said I do,
and we have said it for 40 years.
Absolutely beautiful. Congratulation.
Thank you. I think I’ll keep him for another 40 or so.
Blessings to you both on your 40th Anniversary! Congratulations!

Thanks. That is our hope till He comes.
You have certainly lived in your 40 years together.
Packed a bunch in, joys and trauma with a touch of rock and roll. 🙂
Something tells me you two were meant to be! Your tribute to your marriage and all the “I Do’s” had me choked up. Again, Congratulations Lilly. What a very young and handsome couple you were.
Young and healthy, but naive. I wish my wise head had that young body. Now that would be cool! 🙂
Oooooh! I know just what you mean about having a wise head on a young body! I do love this post Lilly. Yours is a true love for sure.
🙂 The secret to longevity in marriage is not giving up. Sometimes in the rough patches you forget that the story can end happily if you just weather some of the hard plot details.
Congratulations on being true to your I do’s. It sure isn’t easy but the rewards are go very, very great. Next year will be 50 for us.
Good for you! This next generation , I fear, will see fewer and fewer marriages that endure.
So very beautiful! Happy Anniversary!!
Thank you!

Congratulations on 40 + 1 years together. We celebrated our 50th this year and I can relate to all that you shared in your poem. Very beautifully written, Lilly – thanks for posting it again.
Thanks. It is hard to believe so much time has flown by. Wow. Especially when in my head I am still 30!
I hear you, Lilly. That makes me younger than my children – and that makes me pretty amazing. 😀
🙂
I love this! A tribute to God’s blessings and promises and an honor to a well-lived and well-loved marriage!
We love each other more for having weathered storms and survived, though I can’t say I would ask for the pain again. But God has blessed!
