A p r o n h e a d -- Lilly Green
They say that this . . . and they say that that . . .
the anonymous, ubiquitous “they,” who author studies, mandate have-to’s,
shove authority down my throat in a world of words.
But they is slippery,
hidden,
unavailable for criticism or critique;
powerful and sneaky they are–
cocksure–
woven into all conversations where winning is the goal.
If you were going to be honest and give a citation for your sourced they,
It would read Just because they (I) say so!
Lately, I’ve caught myself saying “They said” a bit. I’ve been trying to give “they” a name, if I am writing something.
A good habit.
