“Hi, how’s it goin’?”
“Fine.”
My “How are you?”–if it is more than a verbal high-5–opens up the possibility that you might not be well and might have more than 3 seconds to explain the reason why.
And yet, we really don’t want to take that kind of time.
And yet, we don’t want to appear unfriendly.
And yet . . .
so we continue to play a game that no one plays well.
I think we need to come up with different questions.
I agree!
I think sometimes just the greeting we had in the Ottawa Valley in Ontario and that Aussies have too, is more honest. G’ day. Friendly without commitment or lying. 🙂

DIFFERENT QUESTIONS—IN DEED!
What a colourful picture, I loved it.
Thanks!
But when we say that to our kids….we really mean it!! lol we want to know all about their day.
Exactly!
That piece of work drove me crazy
I hope that’s good! 🙂
I sometimes ask, “Is that a social enquiry or do you really care?” If I get the former response, I invariably say that I was never better.
Once I took a checker at Trader Joe’s up on it, and told him how I really was. He kept smiling, but I saw his skin crawling, I think. I think challenging the ritual is good. 🙂
