“Hi, how’s it goin’?”

“Fine.”

My “How are you?”–if it is more than a verbal high-5–opens up the possibility that you might not be well and might have more than 3 seconds to explain the reason why.

And yet, we really don’t want to take that kind of time.

And yet, we don’t want to appear unfriendly.

And yet . . .

so we continue to play a game that no one plays well.

I think we need to come up with different questions.

    I sometimes ask, “Is that a social enquiry or do you really care?” If I get the former response, I invariably say that I was never better.
